Importance of Russian Friendship for India
By: Kartikeya Semwal
Russia has been a friendly neighbor of India for decades; and ever since President Vladimir Putin took over, Indo-Russian friendship has reached new heights. Russian friendship is of great importance for India for multiple reasons, some of which have been described below:-
1  1. Strong defense ties-
Russia has been providing weapons for Indian armed forces for ages. The army has T-72 and T-90S tanks, the navy has Mig-29K fighters and the air-force has the Mig-21, 23, 27 and Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters. The two countries have also jointly developed the world’s only supersonic cruise missile BRAHMOS. Russia also provides licensed manufacturing of certain weapons to India to fulfill its requirements on time. In case of war with China, Russia has also promised India unconditional support, a big deal of a kind.

    2. Assurance of Energy supplies-
Russia has huge oil and gas deposits, both of which are being provided to India with the help of pipelines. India has also purchased oil and gas reserves in Russia’s Sakhalin block and other areas through its oil and gas companies. This ensures future oil and gas requirements of India at fixed and reasonable prices.

    3.  Support in Space Research-
Russia has played a major role in India’s space programme. The very first of India’s satellites were put into orbit with the help of Russia’s soviet-era rockets only. Russia also helped India develop its own indigenous Cryogenic engine, used to power the heavier GSLV rockets; which are used to put heavier satellites into orbit.

    4.  Huge Bilateral Trade-
Russia also keeps renewing its bilateral trade agreement with India and each time the amount of goods and services to be traded, keeps increasing. Some important sectors in which India trades with Russia include- FMCG products, Healthcare products and medicines, clothes, accessories and IT services. Strong bilateral trade also helps maintain good friendly relations between the two countries.

    5.  Support in international organizations-
Russia has and is still helping India gain membership in major international organizations, some of them being UN-related. Russia is also supporting India’s claim of NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group). If India becomes its member, it will be able to sell nuclear power plants to other developed and developing countries all over the world.

For those important reasons, India must maintain and further strengthen its friendship with Russia. It will also help India to become a developed nation.
