Indian Navy gearing up for underwater combat with Project 75-I

We all know that China has a lot of submarines and now that it has the largest navy in the world, it is trying to force in and get into the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean region. Now there’s just one way to stop them from doing so, and that is- get more submarines for the Indian Navy. Keeping the Chinese challenge in mind, the Indian Navy is up on its toes and has started working to acquire new submarines in the next decade.

Indian Navy is going to acquire 6 latest generation attack subs by 2022 under Project 75i. Many of you won’t know about this project so let me tell you. The Project 75i is a program to acquire 6 Scorpene class diesel-electric submarines that will be powered by air-independent propulsion system (AIP). All these subs are designed by French company DCNS in partnership with Spanish firm Navantia.
INS Kalvari

All these next-generation submarines are being built at Mazagon Dock in Mumbai using technology and training of staff provided by DCNS. The Indian Navy will use these 6 submarines for various missions such as area surveillance, intelligence gathering, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface/ship, warfare and mine-laying operations.
INS Khanderi

The 1st of these subs called INS Kalvari was commissioned in December 2017, followed by the 2nd sub INS Khanderi in 2019. The 3rd sub of this class INS Karanj was commissioned recently in March 2021. The 4th one called INS Vela is scheduled to be commissioned by the Indian Navy later this year. The induction of these subs will improve the Indian Navy’s deep-sea patrolling and defense of maritime boundaries abilities.
MBDA SM-39 Exocet Anti ship missile

All these submarines are conventional attack submarines that have a submerged speed of 20 knots and can remain underwater for 21 days. All these subs are equipped with 6 torpedo tubes, 18 heavy weapons, tube-launched MBDA SM-39 Exocet anti-ship missiles and precision-guided weapons. A catch of these submarines is that they can be reloaded with weapons while at sea. These submarines can launch crippling attacks on surface ships and underwater enemy subs.
