Dealing with Wannacry
Ransomeware
By: Kartikeya Semwal
Countries all over the
world got a shock in May 2017 when an unknown group of hackers attacked
computers all over the world with a worm called “Wannacry Ransomeware”. It is a
crypto worm that attacks computers running on Microsoft Operating System, by
encrypting the data present in the computers and locks them, asking for
password to unlock it. The password is present with the hackers only, who then
demand money in ransome in Bitcoins in exchange of providing password to unlock
the computer.
This cyber-attack took
place from 12 to 15 May 2017 and infected 3,00,000 computers and 2,00,000
people across 100 countries. Its impact was huge as most of the people were
using various new versions of Windows such as 7, 8.1, 10, Windows Servers 2008,
2012, 2016 and Windows Vista. “Wannacry Ransomeware” used the computers’ ‘Eternal
Vulnerability’ to spread itself.
Surprisingly, those
people using older versions of Microsoft Windows such as Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003 had very less effect of this ransomeware. This means that those two
Windows had some kind of resistance in them against the ransomeware, which
needs to be identified and rediscovered so that it can be used to make an
anti-crypto wormware.
There is one more
thing that can be done to prevent this kind of crypto-worm and that is- to not
open any kind of suspicious or unknown page or e-mail; and prevent anyone from
getting access to your computer. This can also be done by blocking the URL that
carries the wormware, from dispatching its payload on the targeted computers.
You can also download latest security patches released by Microsoft for all its
Windows versions. Also keep your anti-virus up to date by upgrading it every
month.
