Milestones of ISRO

The Achievements of ISRO
By: Kartikeya Semwal
ISRO (Indian Space research Organization) doesn’t needs any introduction. Till date ISRO has successfully launched many satellites in the earth’s orbit. Today we will discuss some of its major achievements which have made it a leading space organization in the world. ISRO recently launched 104 satellites in a single launch using its PSLV-C37 rocket. Of the 104 satellites, India owned CARTOSAT-2 & 2 other Nano satellites while the remaining 101 were 1 each from UAE, Netherland, Kazakhstan, Israel, Switzerland and 96 from USA.

ISRO’s big success stories started from October 2008 when it launched its first Moon Mission ‘Chandrayan-1’ successfully. The mission lasted 312 days and ended in August 2009. It mapped the moon’s surface and discovered water on it in the form of condensed ice.

In November 2013, ISRO launched ‘Mangalyaan’ or Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). This made it only the world’s 4th space agency across the world for carrying out an inter-planetary mission. It was also the cheapest Mars Mission at just $74 million.

This was followed by the heaviest commercial mission of ISRO in July 2015 through its PSLV-C28 rocket that carried a payload of 1440 kg. The same year in October 2015, it successfully tested its GSLV Mark-III rocket.

Next year in April 2016, ISRO developed and successfully put into orbit ‘IRNSS’ (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) nicknamed ‘Navic’. It is a group of 7 satellites that will rotate around the earth’s orbit, with focus on India & its neighboring countries. The IRNSS is similar to GPS satellite navigation system of USA; and is meant to keep tabs on India’s land and sea borders.

The same year in April 2016, ISRO successfully tested ‘RLV’ (Renewable Launch Vehicle) keeping India’s future man mission in mind. The RLV will also reduce the cost of satellite launches in near future significantly. This was followed by launch of 20 heavy satellites using a single PSLV-C34 rocket in June 2016.

All these achievements of ISRO have made it a reliable and successful space research & satellite launch organization in the world. Hats off to ISRO for its achievements.
